How much sodium do you actually need in an electrolyte drink?

Start with the baseline: you probably get enough already

Sodium is not scarce in a modern diet. Average intake in the United States sits above the recommended limit, and the great majority of it arrives through packaged and restaurant food rather than the salt shaker. For a sedentary day, adding a sodium supplement is solving a problem most people do not have.

This matters because electrolyte marketing tends to imply a widespread deficiency. For sodium specifically, the population-level picture is closer to the opposite.

The situations where it genuinely changes

There are four where extra sodium has a real rationale behind it:

  • Prolonged or heavy sweating. Sweat contains sodium, and both sweat rate and sweat sodium concentration vary substantially between individuals. Two people doing the same session in the same conditions can lose meaningfully different amounts.
  • Heat. Working or training in hot conditions raises sweat rate considerably compared with the same effort in cool weather.
  • Illness with vomiting or diarrhoea. This is what oral rehydration solutions were designed for, and the sodium-with-glucose formulation exists precisely because it works.
  • Low-carbohydrate diets. Reduced insulin lowers sodium retention by the kidneys, so losses rise. This is a genuine physiological effect rather than a marketing angle.

A rough way to place yourself

If you finish a session with visible salt crusting on your skin or clothing, or a white residue on a dark cap, you are likely at the saltier end of the range and a higher-sodium product makes sense. If you rarely sweat through a shirt, you are almost certainly better served by something at the low end — or by nothing at all.

This is a heuristic, not a measurement. Sweat testing exists if you want an actual figure, and it is what athletes with real requirements use.

The mistake worth avoiding

The common error is not picking a dose that is too high or too low in the abstract — it is buying a product whose marketing suggests one use case while its panel serves another. A mix with 55 mg of sodium sold with athletic imagery will not replace what you lose on a hot long run. A 1,000 mg stick is not a sensible thing to sip through an office afternoon.

Common questions

Is 1,000 mg of sodium in one drink too much?

For someone sitting at a desk, it is far more than they need — most people already exceed sodium recommendations from food alone. For someone finishing a long run in summer heat, it may be reasonable replacement. The dose is not inherently good or bad; it is appropriate or inappropriate to a situation.

Does drinking more water make you need more electrolytes?

Drinking a lot of plain water while also losing sodium through heavy sweat can dilute blood sodium, which is the mechanism behind exercise-associated hyponatraemia. This is uncommon and largely confined to long endurance events where people drink heavily without replacing sodium. For ordinary daily water intake it is not a practical concern.

Do I need electrolytes on a low-carb or keto diet?

Sodium losses do genuinely increase when carbohydrate intake drops, because lower insulin levels reduce sodium retention by the kidneys. This is a real mechanism rather than marketing, and it is why higher-sodium products are commonly recommended in the first weeks of a ketogenic diet. How much extra any individual needs still varies.
