What Salt Is Best for Electrolytes?

Every salt is about 98% sodium chloride. Here is what the remaining 2% actually is, and whether it justifies the price difference.

The short answer

For the purpose of replacing electrolytes, the differences between salts are almost irrelevant. Table salt, sea salt, Himalayan pink and Real Salt are all roughly 98–99% sodium chloride, and sodium chloride is the part doing the work.

Two real distinctions survive scrutiny, and neither is the one the marketing emphasises:

  • Iodine. Refined table salt is usually fortified with it; speciality salts usually are not. Iodised salt is a public-health measure that prevents genuine deficiency, so switching entirely to pink salt is the one change here with a plausible downside.
  • Crystal size. A teaspoon of coarse salt holds meaningfully less sodium than a teaspoon of fine salt, simply because of how the crystals pack. If you are measuring by spoon, this matters far more than the mineral content.

If you want a second electrolyte rather than a fancier version of the first, the answer is not a different rock salt — it is lite salt, which swaps roughly half the sodium chloride for potassium chloride.

The salts compared

Composition figures below are widely reported approximate ranges, not per-batch assays. Any salt sold for food is overwhelmingly sodium chloride; the variation is in the last percent or two.

Note the pattern: the sodium chloride column barely moves. That is the whole story.

Do the trace minerals actually matter?

This is the claim the premium salt category is built on, so it deserves a direct answer: the trace minerals are real, and the quantities are too small to matter nutritionally.

The arithmetic is straightforward. If a salt is 98% sodium chloride, then all other minerals combined make up about 2% of it. A generous 5 g of salt in a day — already at the upper end of what is recommended — leaves roughly 100 mg for every other mineral put together, spread across dozens of them. Against a magnesium requirement in the hundreds of milligrams, a share of that 100 mg is noise.

You cannot eat enough salt to get a useful dose of anything except sodium and chloride, because the sodium becomes a problem long before the trace minerals become a benefit.

That is not an argument against unrefined salts. They taste different, and if you prefer them, buy them. It is an argument against paying a premium for a nutritional claim that the numbers do not support. The iodine question

This is the one place where switching salts has a plausible downside, and it goes the opposite way to what you would expect from the marketing.

Salt iodisation is one of the more successful public-health interventions there has been; iodine deficiency causes thyroid problems and, in pregnancy, developmental harm. Most speciality salts are not iodised, and someone who replaces all their table salt with pink salt and does not eat much dairy, fish or seaweed can plausibly end up short.

This is not a reason for alarm, but it is a reason to keep iodised salt in the kitchen even if you use something else in your drink bottle — and a reason to raise it with a clinician if you are pregnant.

A DIY electrolyte mix, with real numbers

If you want to make your own rather than buy a mix, the useful thing to know is what a measure actually delivers. Approximate figures for fine salt:

A workable everyday mix is 500 ml of water, an eighth of a teaspoon of salt, and a squeeze of citrus for palatability. Swap in lite salt to get potassium alongside the sodium. Two cautions. Teaspoon measurements vary substantially with crystal size — weigh it if precision matters. And if you have high blood pressure, kidney disease, or take potassium-sparing medication, do not start adding salt or lite salt to your drinks without asking a clinician first. Lite salt in particular is a potassium supplement in everything but name.

Common questions

Is Himalayan pink salt better than table salt for electrolytes?

Not meaningfully. Both are around 98% sodium chloride, and the sodium is what you are after. Pink salt contains trace minerals that give it its colour, but in quantities far too small to contribute usefully to your intake — you would need to eat an unsafe amount of salt to get a meaningful dose of anything else. The real differences are iodine (table salt is usually fortified, pink salt is not) and price.

How much salt should I put in my electrolyte drink?

A quarter teaspoon of fine salt is roughly 575 mg of sodium, which lands in the range of a typical sweat-replacement serving. A level teaspoon in a litre of water is the rough domestic approximation of an oral rehydration solution. Measure by weight if you can — teaspoon volumes vary a lot depending on crystal size, and coarse salt gives noticeably less sodium per spoon than fine.

Can I just use table salt for electrolytes?

Yes. For sodium replacement, table salt does the job at a fraction of the cost of speciality salts, and its added iodine is a genuine nutritional benefit rather than a marketing one. What table salt will not give you is potassium or magnesium, which no salt provides in useful amounts.

Does salt alone count as an electrolyte drink?

Partly. Salt gives you sodium and chloride, which are the two you lose most of in sweat. It gives you essentially no potassium or magnesium. If your goal is replacing sweat losses, salt and water covers most of it. If you also want the other minerals, you need a potassium source such as lite salt, or a formulated mix.

What is lite salt or low-sodium salt?

Products sold as "lite" or "low-sodium" salt replace part of the sodium chloride with potassium chloride, so they provide both. That makes them a cheap way to add potassium to a homemade mix. Important caveat: if you have kidney disease or take potassium-sparing diuretics, ACE inhibitors or ARBs, potassium chloride is exactly the thing to ask a doctor about before using.
